Opportunity for Developing an e-SAF Value Chain in NSW: Draft for Consultation
12 March 2025
This work was carried out by NSW PFHN with support from NSW OCSE.
The study “Opportunity for Developing an e-SAF Value Chain in NSW” explores the potential for establishing a synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) industry in NSW, supporting the state’s decarbonisation goals and the aviation sector’s transition to low-emission fuels.
While bio-SAF, derived from biomass, faces feedstock limitations and can only supply half the SAF required for net-zero aviation by 2050, e-SAF—produced from CO2 and renewable hydrogen—offers a scalable alternative despite its current high costs, which are expected to decrease with technological advancements.
NSW’s strategic advantages, including abundant renewable energy; Sydney Airport’s status as a key aviation hub; and strong government emissions reduction commitments, position it as a leader in e-SAF development.
The study assesses potential e-SAF hubs and markets, emphasizing a conceptual hub under the P2X Hub and Precinct Framework, with stakeholder input reinforcing the importance of e-SAF in NSW’s low-carbon aviation future.
We welcome enquiries and feedback on this draft study. Please submit any feedback prior to Monday 14 April 2025.
