NSW Emissions Reduction Roadmap

The Emissions Reduction Roadmap is a 1-year project funded by the NSW Government through the Primary Industry Productivity and Abatement Program and the LPIN. Led by NSW DPIRD, the project has undertaken extensive industry consultation, and will generate a roadmap for NSW land and primary industries sectors to transition to a low emissions future, across 8 sub-sectors.

Proposed decarbonisation areas include:

• Fisheries
• Blue Carbon
• Forestry
• Renewable energy and energy efficiency
• Nitrogen management including fertiliser
• Intensive and extensive ruminant livestock incl. anti-methanogenic supplements
• Beneficial use of biomass, incl for biochar
• Soil carbon management
• Monogastric livestock production
• Broadacre cropping
• Horticulture, viticulture and protected cropping
• Managed native landscapes

Inputs:

• Partnership: 1-yr collaboration between NSW government and research sector
• Subject matter experts across 8 subsectors and cross-cutting topics
• Integral consultation with industry and government, on barriers and opportunities
• Review of literature including carbon footprint analyses
• Marginal abatement cost-analysis of strategies and potential adoption rates

Outputs:

• The roadmap (state-of-play understandings)
• Studies on abatement potential of individual mitigation options, description of the methods, and marginal abatement costs

Outcomes:

• Guiding government decision making
• Building capacity across the land & primary industries sector

Expected Impact:

A mature and collaborative emissions reductions community of land and primary industries sector players in NSW
