The Challenge

Agricultural land in NSW faces growing pressure to generate renewable energy while maintaining crop productivity. Conventional flat or tilted solar panels can create uneven shading, limit land-use efficiency and add structural costs, leaving farmers and regions without locally designed, crop-friendly solutions. No validated 3D photovoltaic systems currently exist in Australia for agriPV, creating a gap for higher-yield, dual-purpose energy and food production.

Our Approach

This project will develop and validate three-dimensional photovoltaic panels for agriPV applications. Using simulation-driven optimisation and lab-scale prototyping, UNSW and CRS Pty Ltd will test 3D panel geometries that capture sunlight from multiple angles while supporting crop-friendly light distribution. The research will include controlled environment validation, techno-economic feasibility analysis and pathways for future pilot demonstrations, building a foundation for commercial adoption in NSW.

Expected Impact

This project aims to provide proof-of-concept 3D PV prototypes and simulation data, supporting pilot demonstrations and scale-up in NSW agricultural regions and positioning NSW to lead in innovative agriPV solutions that generate renewable electricity while maintaining crop productivity. In the longer term, adoption could enable dual land use at scale, supporting emissions reduction, water efficiency and economic growth in farming regions.
